I ran Gentoo for a couple of years both at home and at work to admin my windows network.Īt first I really didn't like the rpm based distros so I stayed away from fedora and Red Hat/Centos however here of late I gotten away from Gentoo and run Fedora and Centos exclusively while I'm studying for my RHCE.Īnd like Neil2020, I promised myself that I would go through a Linux From Scratch install one day. Also the user community is great and extremely helpful. The documentation I found to be the most helpful (I found that other distros commonly referred to Gentoo documentation). Only downfall is if you don't know what your doing it can take you forever to do it and you have to compile everything which takes time. Gentoo is great if you want to really learn Linux or if you are experienced. I ended up trying several other distros but never found them to be exactly what I was searching for. Ubuntu I never really got into however it is easy. Besides that I think its one of the best distros available. I don't care for Debian only because of the older packages it uses and I never found that is was more stable then any other distro. I first started with Slack, very nice but no package manager so I moved on.

The video posted is not relevant to this specific eee pc i am discussing? Because that ones shows installation of a 2.5'' drive something that would be impossible on my netbook i can only fit a ssd like the one from the link i posted above.I've run a lot of different distros over the last few years to get a feel for what I liked. It just isn't worth spending that much time on an eee pc i mean i like old hardware but at the same time i have limits on how much time i would be willing to spend and money as well. However last is only my last resort in case i cannot find a compatible ssd for my 701 that is also not expensive as i would not want to spend more than $30 for one and i did not really need a ssd bigger than 32 gbĪs for the slave drive part, can i just go to bios disable the 4 gb internal hd from booting then it would boot from an OS i would install on a ssd similar to what i linked above?Īll that soldering modding and such is something i would not be up to doing, not only would be time consuming it would also pose a risk of me rendering my laptop useless. I was thinking of buying this 64 gb to install a complete ldxe OS ( not live)

i only tested the live os system on a class 4 card because i don't have any class 10 cards so if it lagged just a tiny bit on the class 4 for videos i would imagine a class 10 would do a better stable job. I suppose if this is not possible my last resort would be installing ldxe on a 32 or 64 class 10 card. However i seem to have a pci-e slot that i could possibly use for a small pci-e ssd but due to the era this laptop was released i am not quite sure which ones would be compatible. The onboard 4 gb of ram it has seems very limited and since its soldered on i cannot change it. My eee pc is just s 701 model it does not that sd or 4g just 701. You mentioned installing from a ssd would be faster but what ssd would i be able to use for my 701 ? If you have one can you note the model number of the ssd you are using?
